Journal, diary, documents, and correspondence related to two ministers in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in N.C. The correspondence consists of letters to Rev. Robert W. Pickens, and Susan Forgey Pickens, his second wife, from friends and relatives in Va. and Tenn. near the N.C. border. The topics include family matters, financial and property matters, the Civil War, free African-Americans, and religious and political conflict during reconstruction in Tenn. One letter (1860, Feb. 17) describes a suspected African-American insurrection in Sugar Hill, Va. Another letter (1895) to Rev. Cornelius Pickens, Robert Pickens' son, comments on the attitude that women are inferior to men. The journal (1921) concerns Cornelius Pickens and his travels in southern Europe, the Holy Land, and northern Africa. The diary (1892-1901) concerns his personal, social, and ecclesiastical affairs in N.C., with frequent references to Prohibition.
